Divorce and the recreation of marriage has been the target of attacks since God had created it in the beginning of creation. It is at the top of the devils list of perversion in an attempt to pervert marriage and that with good reason. Marriage was created to reflect the Triune God who created it and ordained it with purpose, intentionality, and precision. Along with the attacks upon marriage and the perversion to the holy version God created marriage to be comes the dismantling of the family unit and the deconstruction of the foundation families were to be founded upon in the Lord. With divorce comes pain, heartache, division, purposelessness, fear, and a plethora of collateral damage for all involved from the husband and wife down to the children. If marriage was created to reflect God and the Who and how He is, then divorce is intended to reflect Satan and all the who and how he is and intends to spread throughout humanity. If we no longer see and experience the Lord as the creator of marriage and foundation of marriage then we are subject to see marriage as anything other than the creator God, His reflection, His being. And His purposes for marriage, which leaves it in the hands of something below than God, the creation whose intent it to then create marriage in its own likeness and for its own purposes and means. Mark closes out Jesus’s ministry in Galilee to never return again as the Lord marches ever closer to the rugged cross that awaits Him. He then enters the region of Judea and across the Jordan River where John the Baptists had taught and the region in which John was killed by the hands of Herod for going against the marriage of both Herod and his wife/ sister-in-law Herodias, formally the wife of his brother Phillip and their divorce declaring their marriage as unlawful and therefore adulterous. Here it is that Jesus, who was met by a crowd of people who He began to teach as was His custom, the things of the kingdom of God and to heal many, was also met by the Pharisees who came to test the Lord by asking, is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? The intentions of the Pharisees were to trap Jesus through His answer in hopes to have Him go against Herod and meet the same demise as John and/or to cause division amongst the people in choosing sides of two different schools of thought and in turn hinder the ministry of the gospel and Jesus’s credibility. Jesus uses this test of the Pharisees regarding marriage and divorce as a means to point people back to the Lord. It is important to understand that just like marriage and divorce is happening in our day and age it had also been happening the day and age of Jesus where Jesus took the time to remind people of the sanctity, purpose, and holy matrimony of marriage as a thing created by God and created for better and for worse not for prosperity and for divorce. Not much has changed since the days of Jesus till now in that as the Lord is speaking and teaching people in accordance with His word through His people, that the world instead is trying to find and pursue a means to distort and pervert God’s word for their own selfish means and desires.
