Hebrews Sermon Series | Perseverance in Christ | Today, If You Hear His Voice Pt.3 | Hebrews 3:7-19
We live in a time where the faithfulness of Christ is met with an unfaithfulness of the people who claim to call upon His faithfulness within their/our lives. We hear his voice through the preaching and reading of His word and yet we ignore His voice for the voices of self, the voices of temptation, the voices of sin, and the voices of the enemy of our soul. John 10:27 The sheep that are My own hear My voice and listen to Me; I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they will never, ever [by any means] perish; and no one will ever snatch them out of My hand. The Holy Spirit is calling as wisdom calls into the streets from the street corners declaring and warning, “Today if you hear My voice, do not ignore it nor harden your hearts.” After being met with the faithfulness of Jesus in 3:1-6 the writer warns his audience and readers including us today, do not harden your hearts in responding to the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus with a heart of unfaithfulness.
The writer of Hebrews uses the examples of the Israelites of old who were the partakers of the exodus and the many miracles of the Lord who proved His faithfulness to His people yet was responded to with the unfaithfulness of His people. It was these who were led into the wilderness and who would be destroyed by God in that same wilderness who never entered into the promised land God had prepared for them. An 11-day journey that ended in a 40-year wandering in that same wilderness due to the unfaithfulness of God’s people who would test and try the God of heaven and face the consequence of His anger and wrath. Yet, today, nothing is new under the sun as people continue to ignore and harden their hearts against God and are being warned as we are being warned today. What do the Israelites of old have to do with the believers of today?
