Mark continues this section from where he left off with Jesus sending out of the apostles (special messengers) in verse 13, who return from their completed assignments and gathered around Jesus to report all they had done and taught. The feeding of the five thousand is a miracle event recorded in all four gospels as a testimony to the Lordship of Christ that reveals His ability to provide and meet the need of His people as Lord and Savior to all who believe and receive Him as such. He is our provision, and He is our sustainer. But there is also another lesson we can learn from within this story of the feeding of the five thousand, and it is the need of resting in Christ as Jesus’s actions are compared to that of His disciples. While, even as Christians we are prone to fall short in the area and essence of resting in the Lord due to finding and trading our identity and drive from the rush and fulfillment of serving, rather than on the One we are serving or serving from a position of resting in the One we are serving. When we do not learn how to rest in Christ, we end up with hearts that will ultimately stop burning for Christ because they will burn out from serving from a position of weariness/works and not rest.
