Signs of the Times: The Great Preparation (Mark 13:1-13)
Jesus leaves the temple for the final time, never to return as His death drew nearer and nearer. After condemning the false religious leaders and false religion altogether and giving an example of the need to have a true relationship with God through the actions of a poor widow, as they were leaving the temple Mark says one of Jesus’s disciples, while Matthew and Luke state it was some of the disciples attempted to get Jesus to look and admire the magnificence and splendor of the temple and massive stones it had. They were caught up in the beauty and awe of the temple, which was a spectacular and beautiful building in all of Jerusalem made by Herod that reflected Herodian dynasty that was not built to honor God, but instead to honor Herod and built for the appeasing of the Jews whom he ruled over. Jesus, in Jesus fashion, instead of following their lead and falling into the hype of gazing upon such building in which He just drove people out of, flipped over tables and benches of the money changers and sellers, called it a den of robbers, and forbid people to carry merchandise through its courts as recorded in Mark 11:15-17, replied and declared its coming destruction and down casting of every stone in which not one stone will be left on another. Jesus’s prophetic word against the temple was to prophecy of the destruction of the temple that also represented the destruction of the whole religious system He had just warned, preached, and taught against. It was from this backdrop that Jesus was petitioned by His disciples who asked, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?
