Jesus has touched on the need for a cultivated listening heart in verses 1-9 of chapter 4; the need to cultivate a responsive heart in verses 10-25; and now He gives a short yet powerful parable regarding the growing seed, which the Lord exclaimed, means the word of God. He uses this parable to tell what the kingdom of God is like. Jesus explains the kingdom of God using the parable of the growing seed to indicate the kingdom of God is always and ever growing and leading and transforming people towards maturity or a/the final harvest and that without anyone’s assistance or help, but by God alone. ​
