Jesus had just declared to the disciples their rejection and pending disowning of their Lord in describing the pride that comes before the fall− to the disciples’ own declaration, even if they had to die with Jesus, they would never disown Him. It was before midnight, after the Last Supper, Mark records Jesus going to the Mount of Olives taking with Him His disciples that would end with Him going into the garden of Gethsemane with the intent to pray. The weight of sin of the whole world was pressing upon His soul creating an overwhelming sorrow to the point of feeling like death itself was upon Him. The reality of the cross, death, and the son of the world (your sin, my sin, the world’s sin) being placed upon Him was weighing on our precious Lord’s conscious and soul of things He nor any human ever experienced. But even more, the troubling thought of something our Lord never had to endure− being separated from His Almighty Father even for a moment. ​ Jesus was about to endure something He never had to experience ever as God and as the God-Man. There was nothing in Him that was sinful nor a sinful nature that would connect sin to His being. He was completely holy, pure, and perfect without any defect that would comprehend any relationship to or connection with sin or defect. He is God in the flesh in whom no sin can reside or had ever resided. He was always united with His Father, always connected in their relationship, always in unison, always constant communion, and communication. Now, for the first time in His being as everlasting God who has no beginning, and no end is having to experience that which He had never experienced and that for the creation He had created in His image and likeness. It is a feeling and act we will never have to endure, yet our great Savior and God experienced and endured for us to be saved and forgiven of our sin. ​
